We're pleased to announce the first major renovation of Pioneer Works! To accommodate the first phase of our construction, we're temporarily relocating to 133 Imlay Street opening in Spring 2022.

Since 2013, Pioneer Works has hosted Second Sundays, a free monthly open house. Highlighting our programs, artists-in-residence, and Red Hook community members, Second Sundays features open studios, exhibitions, workshops, live music, and food—with programming across all three floors and in our garden.

At April Second Sundays, the artist-led organization 

 will stage a takeover of the Main Hall, presenting their live filmed variety show twice throughout the day. We'll also have workshops, activations, and talks that expand our ongoing exhibition

 is an ongoing transnational exhibition project that studies the ways in which Asian fashion production is represented. Curated by 

. While earlier iterations used the South China Sea as a conceptual starting point, Atlantic Basin responds to the specificity of New York City—particularly Red Hook, once a major entry point for goods shipped to the United States, and a site that remains deeply connected to the Asian and global textile trade.

Spanning the second and third floors of Pioneer Works, 

begins with three bodies of work that each examine the labor of garment workers, both in Taiwan and America. Inspired by the obsolescence of Taiwan’s textile industry that followed the outsourcing of fashion production to Shenzhen, Huang Po-Chih’s 

Production Line – Made in China & Made in Taiwan

 (2014–2020) situates a row of homogenous, blue denim shirts besides photographs of the young women—including his own mother—who once manufactured them. These works are presented alongside a sprawling archive of handmade garments, ephemera, and video documentation by U.S.-based Chinese artist Chang Yuchen, who began producing work under the moniker Use Value in 2016.

In the decade since, Use Value priced its commodities in accordance with the value of the artist’s time, which fluctuated as Yuchen drifted from various labor markets ranging from the service industry to academia. Use Value’s archive, presented as an incomplete retrospective, is ensconced in clusters of totem-like sculptures and wall-based collages by Serena Chang. Mimicking the forms of sugar cane stalks, Chang’s sculptures repurposed hosiery manufactured by Sheerly Touch-Ya, a company that the artist’s parents founded upon emigration from Taiwan to the United States. Memories of the family’s assimilation echo throughout her collages, which embed videos of manufacturing machinery within complex armatures.

Artist collective CFGNY transforms the third floor gallery into a cardboard-lined container—a reference to the ubiquitous material that serves as a skin for commodities shipped around the world—that houses a new series of photographs recently shot in Ho Chi Minh City. Captured at full-service studios offering everything from photography to makeup and lighting, the images spotlight the young entrepreneurs and influencers cultivating new visions for Vietnam’s garment production infrastructure.

These artworks are accompanied by a constellation of mannequins styled by Juje Hsiung, donning garments by designers who have come up through diasporic systems of enterprise—and done so while playing actively with the aesthetic tropes of Asia. From millennial legends to young New York fashion designers working today, these designers complicate, notions of heritage as style, exploring more complex histories of commodities and bodies in flux. 

—a phrase originally coined by Roland Barthes in his book 

(1967)—borrows its title from an ongoing project by Shanzhai Lyric, the self-described “poetic research unit” comprising artist-archivists Ming Lin and Alex Tatarsky. Over the past decade, the duo has accumulated hundreds of 

 T-shirts—Chinese-made counterfeits that imitate global brands and are peddled in markets across various Asian metropolises as well as New York City. At Pioneer Works, a selection of these garments is displayed, while the artists transform one of the institution’s artist-in-residency studios into a presentation space for their archive of research materials.

The exhibition is notably accompanied by a new, titular book by Shanzhai Lyric, which is composed of the shirts’ slogans, aphorisms, and mistranslations as a single poem. Published by Pioneer Works Press, the book marks a decade of the artists’ archival project while capturing the lyricism of both fast fashion and global clothing culture. As a whole, 

 contests the potential of fashion as a container for imagining community, identity, heritage, and history in both a local and transnational sense.

Aapo Nikkanen is an artist, researcher, and hypnotherapist whose performative and photographic practice uses hypnosis to guide guests into speculative realities His work addresses the development of new technologies, their asymmetrical power concentration, and their political, ecological, and psychological impacts. In the process, he aims to open up spaces for understanding how these mechanisms operate and for evoking a sense of agency and resistance. Nikkanen’s works have been shown in numerous European institutions, including Palais de Tokyo and Fondation Ricard,Paris; the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Rotterdam; Casa Encendida, Madrid; The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik; and De Appel Art Centre, Amsterdam.

Aapo Nikkanen

Alice Wang is a Chinese-born American artist based in New York. She received a B.Sc. in Computer Science and International Relations from the University of Toronto, a BFA from CalArts, and an MFA from New York University. Wang has presented solo exhibitions at the UCCA Dune Art Museum, China; Vincent Price Art Museum, Los Angeles; Capsule Shanghai; and 18th Street Arts Center, Santa Monica, among others. Group presentations include the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Galleria Continua; Para Site, Hong Kong; Fotografiska, New York; and the 14th Shanghai Biennale. Wang was an artist-in-residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP). Upcoming exhibitions include 

 at the New Museum. Her first institutional solo show in New York will open in February 2026 at ISCP.

Alice Wang

Andros Zins-Browne works at the intersection of performance and dance, extending choreographic practice towards non-dancers, vocalists, objects, and text. His work 

 (2016-), which “de-hearses” previous performances, was presented at the ICA, London; The Whitney Museum, New York; RAM, Shanghai; and Fondation Galeries Lafayette, Paris. 

(2019), a cycle of collaborative exhibitions and performances, was included in PERFORMA19 and is currently streaming online on Criterion Channel and Triple Canopy. His “Vocal Choreographies” that activate intimacy through dissonance include 

 (Canal Projects, 2024 and Pioneer Works, 2025, both in New York). Performance “Remixes” include 

(Berlin Biennale, 2018; Dia Art Foundation, New York, 2023) and 

 (MoMA, 2019). Zins-Browne is the recipient of awards from the Goethe-Institut, Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, Ministry of Culture of the Flemish Community, and New York State Council on the Arts.

Barnett Cohen is a visual artist and choreographer whose work proposes a kaleidoscopic, queer surrealism. Select venues include Amant, Canal Projects as part of Performa 2023, The Center for Performance Research, The Exponential Festival, Judson Memorial Church, and RYAN LEE, all in New York; The Institute of Contemporary Art, JOAN, LAXART, REDCAT, and Human Resources, all in Los Angeles; The Centre Wallonie Bruxelles, Paris; Kunsthalle Trondheim, Norway; Rupert, Lithuania; and The Onassis Foundation (online). In 2021, Open Space/SFMoMA published a collection of their poems alongside those of artist and collaborator Simone Forti. Residencies include Skowhegan, MacDowell, NARS, Rupert, and Denniston Hill. Barnett Cohen

As a collaborative duo, Gabriela Ruiz and Emmett Palaima create multisensory work where technology, memory, and fantasy intersect. Ruiz explores surveillance capitalism and mass consumerism across sculpture, performance, digital media, painting, and installation. Her works manifest inner psychological experience through synthetic materials, saturated color, and psychedelic visual distortions. Palaima creates work with electronics and esoteric processes of sound creation. He is conceptually rooted in the idea that technology and magic are one and the same, and that electricity is a manifestation of elemental forces underlying physical reality. His instruments explore sound as a physical process and embody the sculptural beauty of sound-creation systems. Together, the duo build charged spaces that explore the tensions between desire, control, mysticism, and contemporary digital life.

Gabriela Ruiz & Emmett Palaima

iida jonsson and ssi saarinen are a Finnish artist duo, working with film and photography. They hold MFAs from the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Past exhibitions include Berlin Art Week Featured at Reethaus, Berlin; KIN Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiruna; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen; and Kunstverein, Amsterdam. They recently participated in the Helsinki International Artist Programme. During their stay at Pioneer Works, they aim to deepen their research into identity, visibility, and belonging by engaging with the writings of Jennie June, whose autobiographies have long remained at the margins of both literary and queer canons. June’s often overlooked texts are among the earliest published writings by a trans non-binary author.

iida jonsson and ssi saarinen

Jules Reidy works across song cycles and electro-acoustic composition for solo performance, ensembles, and spaces. Their music explores devotional love, transcendence, and ego death, invoking states of uncanniness, dissociation, imagination, and void.

They’ve released on Thrill Jockey, Black Truffle, Shelter Press, Editions Mego, and Longform Editions. Their current collaborations include projects with Sun Kit, Judith Hamann, Andrea Belfi, Sam Dunscombe, David Grubbs, Jan St. Werner, and Ivan Cheng. They're also a member of the Pitch and Oren Ambarchi's various large ensembles. They've recently written for Zinc&Copper, JACK Quartet and the Australian Art Orchestra. They are originally from Australia and are currently based in Berlin.

Jules Reidy

Mae Howard is an artist and organizer calling upon lineages of disabled labor economies rooted in collective exchange and relational dependency. Their practice utilizes endurance to underscore long-form debilitation. Howard's work dwells in leather histories, sadomasochistic protocol, and practice as aesthetic, haptic, and material foils to the medical-carceral industrial complex. They received an MFA and Certificate in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 2023. Howard is a 2026 Queer Art Mentorship Fellow, a 2025-2026 A.I.R. Gallery Fellow, and a 2023-2024 Whitney Independent Study Program Fellow. They have taught multiple courses at the University of Pennsylvania and facilitated Disabled Erotics at The School of Making Thinking in 2024 and 2025.

Mae Howard

Shanzhai Lyric (est. 2015) is a roving poetic research unit exploring radical logistics and linguistics through technological aberration and nonofficial cultures. Drawing inspiration from the experimental English of “shanzhai” (counterfeit) T-shirts made in China, they examine how mimicry, hybridity, and permutation reveal the artifice of global hierarchies. 

, their archive of poetry garments, circulates through poetry-lectures, publications, and installations. In 2020, they founded the fictional office of Canal Street Research Association to probe ideas of ownership and property through bootleg-as-method. Their work has been presented at Abrons Arts Center, Amant, Artists Space, MoMA PS1, Sculpture Center, and Storefront for Art & Architecture, all in New York; Stuart Hall Library, London; Times Museum, Guangzhou, China; and others. Their writing has appeared in
