Aapo Nikkanen
Visual Arts Residency
Aapo Nikkanen is an artist, researcher, and hypnotherapist whose practice uses hypnosis to create performative and photographic work. In his performances and photographs, guests are guided into speculative realities through hypnosis. His work addresses the development of new technologies, their asymmetrical power concentration, and their political, ecological, and psychological impacts. This practice aims to open up spaces for understanding how these mechanisms operate and for evoking a sense of agency and resistance. Nikkanen’s works have been shown in numerous European institutions, including Palais de Tokyo and Fondation Ricard in Paris, the Rotterdam International Film Festival, Casa Encendida in Madrid, The Living Art Museum in Reykjavik, and De Appel Art Centre in Amsterdam.
This residency is organized in collaboration with the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York.
