Second Sundays is a free event series that engages Pioneer Works disciplines through live music, food, artists’ open studios, and interactive programs.

Pioneer Works, the astronomers of Columbia University, and the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York host various stargazing events. We welcomed thousands of New Yorkers into our garden for The Great American Eclipse and regularly bring our telescopes out for public viewing, including most Second Sundays.

In Stamped, writer Claudia Rankine and filmmaker and photographer John Lucas have collaboratively captured photographs of dyed blonde hair, as seen on the heads of strangers and acquaintances.

Matthew Morrocco’s exhibition Orchid: RGB features a new series of photographs, which revolve around “Orchid,” a nameless, genderless figure posing in various landscapes of abstract RGB color fields.

Shiri Rozenberg is a photographer and a conceptual artist working with photography, installation, and text. Rozenberg received her BFA in photography and is currently working on her MFA both from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem, Israel. Her point of view raises questions about her environment, as she brings up different conflicts between cultures, nationalities, sexuality, and gender. She seeks to re-assimilate within a place and through the same assimilation, to create a new narrative in which she chooses it’s boundaries or alternately break them. Her work has been exhibited in a number of galleries in Israel, USA and South Korea.

Shiri Rozenberg

Gözde İlkin lives and works in Istanbul, Turkey. She studied painting at the Fine Arts Faculty of Mimar Sinan University and is pursuing a master’s degree at Marmara University in Istanbul. Using mainly stitching, drawing, and painting as well as video and sound installations, İlkin constructs forms of confrontational interactions within the motifs of found domestic fabrics. In the process, she refers to social and political relationships/manipulation, borders, power issues, gender attitudes, and urban transformation. 

Selected solo exhibitions include: The Trap, Gypsum Gallery, Cairo (2016); Stained Estate at Françoise Heitsch Gallery, Munich (2015); and Please Clear the Dance Floor, artSümer Gallery, Istanbul (2010). Selected group exhibitions include the 15th Istanbul Biennale, A Good Neighbour (2017); Spaceliner, Arter, Istanbul (2015); and No one belongs here more than you, 54th October Salon, Belgrade (2013). Between 2006 and 2013, she worked with Gülcin Aksoy and Yasemin Nur Erkalır as a collective called AtılKunst.

Gözde İlkin

Louis Fratino lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. He is currently making paintings and drawings that focus on homoerotic love. Figures and interiors are generated by mixing art historical references in an attempt to conjure feelings of intimacy. 

Fratino attended the Maryland Institute College of Art, graduating in 2015 with a degree in painting. He also attended the Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art and was awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship to Berlin in 2016. He recently had a solo exhibition at Antoine Levi, Paris. Other exhibitions include Matisse + Fratino, Cabinet Printemps, Düsseldorf (2018); So I've got you, Thierry Goldberg, New York (2017); and Practice in Leisure, Galería Mascota, Mexico DF, (2017).

Louis Fratino

Mary Helena Clark is an artist working in film, video, and installation. Her work uses the language of collage to explore dissociative states through cinema, bringing together disparate subjects and styles that suggest an exterior logic or code. Using the conventions of narrative, language, and genre, her films explore shifting subjectivities and the limits of the embodied camera. Clark’s work has recently been exhibited at DOCUMENT, Chicago; Künstlerhaus, Stuttgart, Germany; JOAN, Los Angeles; and the 2017 Whitney Biennial, New York; and at festivals including the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the New York Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the Hong Kong International Film Festival.

NIC Kay is from the Bronx. 

They currently occupy several liminal spaces. 

They are a person who makes performances and creates/organizes performative spaces. 

They are obsessed with the act and process of moving, the change of place, production of space, position, and the meaning gleaned from the shifting of perspective. 

Their current trans disciplinary projects explore movement as a place of reclamation.

Autumn Knight is an interdisciplinary artist working with performance, installation and text. Her work primarily addresses conventions of racial and gender identity, psychotherapy, and art access. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and holds an M.A. in Drama Therapy from New York University. Her performance work has been in exhibitions at various institutions including: DiverseWorks, Project Row Houses, and Blaffer Art Museum, all in Houston; Crystal Bridges Museum, Bentonville, Arkansas; Skowhegan Space, New York; The New Museum, New York; The Contemporary Art Museum, Houston; and most recently The Studio Museum in Harlem. Knight is from Houston, Texas, and is currently based in New York, NY.

Autumn Knight

Xin Liu (刘昕, born in<a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/Karamay,+Xinjiang,+China/@42.7265109,82.3501495,5z/data=!4m13!1m7!3m6!1s0x3806008cfd7b4dab:0xa84116ec366707a1!2sXinjiang,+China!3b1!8m2!3d42.5246357!4d87.5395855!3m4!1s0x42a06a2eef16ea89:0xe6c3e6253f9024fc!8m2!3d45.5794451!4d84.8886108"> Xinjiang</a>, 1991) is an artist and engineer.

Xin creates experiences and artifacts to examine what makes subjectivities and affects, to actively participate in the paradigm shifts between technological advances and human experiences, to reconfigure the tools of technology for the recovery of human experiences. Her projects materialize as performances, apparatus, installations, scientific experiments, and academic papers. She has shown her work internationally at events and venues including Ars Electronica, Boston MFA, Sundance Film Festival, The Walker Art Center, OCAT Shanghai, and ISEA. As a researcher, Xin has worked in institutions including Microsoft Research NYC &amp; Asia and Google ATAP.

Xin Liu

Victoria Scott is a Canadian-born educator and visual artist, mainly a sculptor, working between physical materials, emotional energy and electronic media of many flavors. Her projects include constructing material representations of conceptual objects and images that exist in simulated digital environments, the public commons and in the space of cultural imagination. She is currently developing interactive Virtual Reality environments to visualize human energy fields and has just founded Imaginary Objects, a VR/AR company based in San Francisco. Victoria has exhibited throughout North America and Europe, and completed her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Victoria Scott

Mani Nilchiani and Caroline Sinders are a collaborative duo exploring the future of surveillance and networked identities in VR with their interactive narrative project “Dark Patterns.” Their project and residency is imagining a near future dystopia in a world with zero net neutrality, rising fascism, and surveillance in everyday products. “Dark Patterns” has previously been shown at MoMA PS1, the Weird Reality Conference at Carnegie Mellon University, and at Pioneer Works Second Sundays.

Caroline Sinders is a researcher and artist working at the intersections of emerging technology and public good through critical design and narrative. Sinders holds a masters from New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. She is from New Orleans, Louisiana and is currently based in Brooklyn.

Mani Nilchiani is an artist, technologist, and musician. His work explores displacement, memory, and diasporic psyche. Nilchiani holds a masters from the Parsons School of Design’s Design and Technology Program. He is from Tehran, Iran and is currently based in Brooklyn.

Abdu Ali is an independent music artist, writer, and multimedia arts curator based in Baltimore. Ali has released five musical projects, all notable for their idiosyncratic blend of punk, futurism, jazz, Baltimore Club Music, and rap music, with lyrics yielding poetic uprise. Through their work as a rapper, curator, writings, and outspokenness via social media/interviews Ali, has been elected as a radical underground Baltimore music and cultural figure. Ali, was also the founder of Kahlon, an iconic underground party that radicalized the artistic climate and made space for marginalized musicians in Baltimore. Unapologetically black, gay, and queer, Abdu Ali’s work is bold, raw, and most importantly life-affirming.

Ali has done several tours across the U.S. and Europe, and through their energetic visceral performances, spiritualizing audiences, their has been anointed as a cosmic, punk, and soulful tempest on stage. They have shared stages with notable music acts like the Sun Ra Arkestra, Mykki Blanco, Busdriver, Dan Deacon, Lower Dens, Blaqstarr, FKA TWIGS, and has been covered internationally by Complex, AfroPunk, Saint Heron, Noisey, The Fader, Mask Magazine, Subbacultcha, Les InRocks, Tracks Arte TV, and many more. Ali is working on an EP and a debut album, developing their new media co-op drumBOOTY, and now their performances are accompanied by drummer Josh Stokes.

Abdu Ali

Led by artist-in-residence Autumn Knight and collaborator Chelsea Knight, this workshop uses text-driven discourse and a group performative exercise to address tactics and tools for recognizing and engaging with the subject of rage. A performance will follow.

She is currently developing interactive Virtual Reality environments to visualize human energy fields and has just founded Imaginary Objects, a VR/AR company based in San Francisco. Victoria has exhibited throughout North America and Europe, and completed her MFA at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Victoria Scott is a Canadian-born educator and visual artist, mainly a sculptor, working between physical materials, emotional energy and electronic media of many flavors. Her projects include constructing material representations of conceptual objects and images that exist in simulated digital environments, the public commons and in the space of cultural imagination. Mani Nilchiani and Caroline Sinders are a collaborative duo exploring the future of surveillance and networked identities in VR with their interactive narrative project “Dark Patterns.” Their project and residency is imagining a near future dystopia in a world with zero net neutrality, rising fascism, and surveillance in everyday products. “Dark Patterns” has previously been shown at MoMA PS1, the Weird Reality Conference at Carnegie Mellon University, and at Pioneer Works Second Sundays.

 is a researcher and artist working at the intersections of emerging technology and public good through critical design and narrative. Sinders holds a masters from New York University’s Interactive Telecommunications Program. She is from New Orleans, Louisiana and is currently based in Brooklyn.

 is an artist, technologist, and musician. His work explores displacement, memory, and diasporic psyche. Nilchiani holds a masters from the Parsons School of Design’s Design and Technology Program. He is from Tehran, Iran and is currently based in Brooklyn.

Abdu Ali is an independent music artist, writer, and multimedia arts curator based in Baltimore. Ali has released five musical projects, all notable for their idiosyncratic blend of punk, futurism, jazz, Baltimore Club Music, and rap music, with lyrics yielding poetic uprise. Through their work as a rapper, curator, writings, and outspokenness via social media/interviews Ali, has been elected as a radical underground Baltimore music and cultural figure. Ali, was also the founder of Kahlon, an iconic underground party that radicalized the artistic climate and made space for marginalized musicians in Baltimore. Unapologetically black, gay, and queer, Abdu Ali’s work is bold, raw, and most importantly life-affirming.

Ali has done several tours across the U.S. and Europe, and through their energetic visceral performances, spiritualizing audiences, their has been anointed as a cosmic, punk, and soulful tempest on stage. They have shared stages with notable music acts like the Sun Ra Arkestra, Mykki Blanco, Busdriver, Dan Deacon, Lower Dens, Blaqstarr, FKA TWIGS, and has been covered internationally by Complex, AfroPunk, Saint Heron, Noisey, The Fader, Mask Magazine, Subbacultcha, Les InRocks, Tracks Arte TV, and many more. Ali is working on an EP and a debut album, developing their new media co-op drumBOOTY, and now their performances are accompanied by drummer Josh Stokes.
