Youth Programs

In partnership with Red Hook’s elementary, middle, and high schools, Pioneer Works offers enriching, STEAM-based programming for in-school and after school experiences. These programs encourage learning through the arts, music, and technology. School programs often feature themes, topics, and materials that are explored throughout Pioneer Works Exhibitions. Workshops are led by current or former Artists-in-Residence and skilled multidisciplinary educators.

Discoverer Program: Elementary School (Grades 2-5)
+

Discoverer Program

In the Discoverer program, we focus our lens on self expression through STEAM. Designing projects that reflect individual creativity, we help students develop skills that align with their personal vision, passions, and goals.

Ideas in Animation

In this hands-on program, students explore the history of animation, experimenting with digital and analog techniques. Through individual, partnered, and group activities, students utilize state-of-the-art software to create simple, two- and three-dimensional animations culminating in short, stop-motion stories.

Ragas Music Education Program

Developed from Pioneer Works’s partnership with Brooklyn Raga Massive (BRM), the Raga Music Education Program offers classes and assemblies at local Red Hook Elementary schools, and introduces students to South Asian music traditions and performance through rhythm, movement, mindfulness, and storytelling. Led by BRM teaching artists, this educational program is flexible and designed to be customized to meet the unique needs of student populations and learners of all ages.

Innovator Program: Middle School (Grades 6-8)
+

Innovator Program

In the Innovator Program, middle school students develop their personal definition of art, elaborating on previous creative experiences and skills. By redefining what art means to them, they determine how it has been—and might be—used for individual and collective storytelling, meaning-making, and inspiration. In the process, they learn autonomy and independence, and reflect on their unique perspective and position in the communities they identify with. Working in groups and under the guidance of PW educators, students conclude the program planning and producing a class presentation of individual and/or group projects."

Visionary Program: High School (Grades 9-12)
+

Visionary Program

The Visionary Program pushes students to imagine a better future for themselves and their communities. How can the status quo be changed to achieve those results? This program gives students the space to identify their individual strengths and passions. Collaborating with each other to receive and provide critical and artistic feedback, students are pushed to leverage those skills for the greater good of their communities. Students will create projects and presentations to document, communicate, and promote their own innovative, transformative, and visionary ideas.

Freedom School Summer Documentary Film Program

In this intensive, six week program, aspiring student filmmakers in middle and high school apply their learned filmmaking skills to direct, shoot, and produce an original short non-fiction documentary, which will be viewed at Red Hook Initiative’s Summer Block Party and Pioneer Works’ September Second Sunday. Red Hook serves as a thematic anchor for this program as we ask our cohorts to lens films that map the histories, people, spaces, and rhythm of our community.
