In this work of art, a solitary figure takes center stage, casting a brilliant light across the sinuous urban landscape. Superimposed with the iconic likeness of Anita Baker, the illustrious singer and songwriter, this piece delves into the themes of romance and unbridled freedom of expression.
 
Within the artwork's vibrant atmosphere, the symphony of life plays out, accompanied by the lustrous pearls of luxury that adorn the symbols of travel. The musical notes embody the essence of artistic liberty and the rich cultural heritage of the African-American community.
 
In the background, a complex web of connections, reminiscent of power lines, weaves its way through the narrative. This intricate network, although occasionally marked by adversity, symbolizes the unwavering strength and resilience of the African American community. The work is a testament to the abundance and interconnectedness of this community as they embark on a journey toward liberation and freedom, guided by the transformative power of song and play.
 
Jamaal Peterman (b. 1990, Fort Lauderdale, FL; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY/MD) received his MFA at Pratt Institute (2019) and BFA from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (2014). He has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art (MoCADA), Public ArtFund, New York; the University of Chicago; Kavi Gupta, Chicago; James Fuentes, New York and Vigo Gallery, London.Peterman has been awarded the Peter S. Reed Foundation grant, commissioned by MoMA PS1 and has undertaken residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, MASS MoCA, Wassaic Project Residency, Fountainhead Residency.

<a href="https://pioneerworks.org/residency/betsy-kenyon">Betsy Kenyon</a>’s book of pinhole photography, Slumber, dwells in the overnight intimacy of bedrooms, its subjects cocooned in their private environments. Created during the most stringent isolation protocols of the Covid pandemic, Slumber images New York City’s population living out surreal times.

Chloe Alexandra Thompson: A Blade of the Tongue Cassette

<a href="https://pioneerworks.org/residency/nicholas-oh">Dave Kim the Potter</a> uses influences from his Korean heritage to create unique, aesthetic and functional work. He believes that by creating work that is in direct dialogue with historic Korean pottery, he is preserving a culture that is slowly dissipating in modern society. Currently based in Brooklyn, NY, he continues to carry on older traditions within a contemporary multicultural context.
Each pottery Kim creates is centered on form, surface, color, and material— elements he derives from traditional Korean pottery techniques. His work incorporates a variety of styles: Sang-gam (Korean inlay technique), Baek-ja (porcelain-ware typically known for Moonjars), and Bun-cheong (technique that uses stamps). The work also reflects new techniques Kim devised in his practice through experimentation.
Kim is invested in creating work that both revitalizes and  honors the core tenets of Korean pottery: simplicity in natural, unpretentious beauty.

Holy People is the longstanding solo music &amp; performing arts project of Pioneer Works music residency alum Leah Victoria. Best described as avant-pop or "clown-poetics", Leah’s multi-layered, lyrical approach to the experimental music genre draws from a wide variety of influences, including spoken word, underground punk, noise &amp; EDM composers, ancestral Andean-Amazonian flute hymns and anents, and of course, classical children’s folk melodies and nursery rhymes.
