Zeerak Ahmed
Music Residency
Slowspin is the project of New York-based sound artist Zeerak Ahmed. She produces voice-based sculptures, sound installations, and uniquely fragile sound collages that explore notions of identity, memory and longing. Raised in Karachi, Ahmed has a distinct sound practice grounded in North Indian classical and matrilineal vocal traditions, paired with dream-folk, ambient, experimental rock and electronic music.
Slowspin’s New York-based quartet includes vocalist Zeerak Ahmed, guitarist Grey Mcmurray, drummer Marlon Patton, and Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist Shahzad Ismaily.
In 2024, Ahmed's solo exhibition exploring folk songs and oral traditions from the zenana (women’s quarters) of pre-partition India, titled Mother, I Am Compelled to Leave, was presented at the Akron Art Museum. The multi-channel sound installation is now part of the museum’s permanent collection.
