Rashaad Newsome

Dr. Rashaad Newsome is an award-winning filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist whose work operates at the intersection of visual art, film, live performance, artificial intelligence, and community organizing. Drawing from diasporic traditions of improvisation and collage, his practice fuses animation, robotics, music, and critical theory to produce counter-hegemonic forms that foreground Black and queer interior life. Newsome’s work has been exhibited and screened internationally at institutions and festivals including SFMOMA, San Francisco; the Whitney Museum and the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Studio Museum in Harlem, SXSW, Austin; and Sundance, Utah. His work is held in major public collections worldwide. Newsome is the recipient of numerous honors, including a 2025 Creative Capital Award, a 2025 United States Artists Fellowship, and the 2022 Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica.
