The Board of Directors of Pioneer Works is pleased to announce that Mara Manus, former Executive Director for New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), has been appointed as the organization’s new Chief Executive Officer.

She teaches in the dance program at Princeton University where she’s developed interdisciplinary courses with titles like: Body and Language; Uncertainty; Power, Structure, and the Human Body; and Stillness. She co-founded Mount Tremper Arts in the Catskill Mountains and was co-curator there until 2014.

Jordan Kisner is an essayist and cultural critic, and the author of the forthcoming, 

, which will be published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in March 2020. Her work has appeared in 

, and others. Kisner is also the recipient of a Pushcart Prize. She is the former director of The Bellwether, teaches creative writing at Columbia University, and serves as a mentor-editor for the Op-Ed Project.

Janani is an artist-in-residence in the brown dwarf astrophysics group at the American Museum of Natural History; 2021-2022 Pew Foundation grantee through the Academy of Natural Sciences; 2021-2022 Collider fellow at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts; 2021 NYFA Fellow in Fiction; and member of the Guild of Future Architects.

Additionally, Janani's work has been presented and/or commissioned by over 160 venues across North America and Europe including the Public Theater, Red Bull Arts, High Line, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. They have been an innovator-in-residence at Colorado College; artist-in-residence at Brooklyn College; artist-in-residence at the University of Colorado; Hemispheric Institute Fellow at NYU; Sundance Institute Fellow; Pioneer Works Narrative Arts Fellow; visiting artist at Stanford University Institute for Diversity in the Arts; Jerome Hill Artist Fellow; and Van Lier Fellow at the Public Theater. They have received additional development support from MAP Fund; Stanford University Ethics, Society, and Technology Hub; Tow Foundation; and National Endowment for the Arts.

Janani Balasubramanian is a writer, new media (AR/VR) artist, and immersive theater maker whose work has been presented at more than 160 stages across North America and Europe. In their practice, Balasubramanian collaborates deeply with astrophysicists to shift how we understand inner and outer space. Balasubramanian is a 2018-2020 Van Lier fellow at the Public Theater; a 2019-2020 Jerome Hill Artist Fellow; artist-in-residence in the brown dwarf astrophysics group at the American Museum of Natural History; and co-founder of the <a href="http://abundantspacecollab.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Abundant Space Collaborative</a> with astronomer Dr. Natalie Gosnell.

Joshua Jelly-Schapiro is a geographer and writer whose work often focuses on place, race, and how human difference is thought about and acted on in the world. He is the author of 

Island People: The Caribbean and the World

, and co-editor, with Rebecca Solnit, of 

Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas

. Jelly-Schapiro teaches at NYU and is a regular contributor to 

The New Yorker, Harper’s, The Believer, The Nation, 

, among many other publications. At Governors Island, he will be working on his next book, an exploration of place-names in the city.

BFAMFAPhD is a collective that employs visual and performing art, policy reports, and teaching tools to advocate for cultural equity in the United States. The collective’s work brings people together to analyze and reimagine relationships of power in the arts.

While in residence, the collective will be working on 

, a multi-platform pedagogical project that offers practices of contemplation, collaboration, and circulation in the visual arts. 

 is a contribution to BFAMFAPhD made by Susan Jahoda and Caroline Woolard. Susan Jahoda is a Professor in Studio Arts at the University of Amherst, MA and Caroline Woolard is an Assistant Professor of Sculpture at The University of Hartford, CT.
