Miina Kaartinen & Sanna Ritvanen
Visual Arts Residency
Researcher Miina Kaartinen and creative producer Sanna Ritvanen represent Mustarinda, a postdisciplinary, non-profit association founded in 2010. Mustarinda is a forerunner of ecological thinking-doing in the art and cultural field, by developing both practical solutions and theoretical frameworks towards post-fossil culture.
Mustarinda’s activities combine contemporary art, boundary-crossing research, practical experimentation, communication, pedagogy and community work. Currently there are two bigger initiatives steering the association’s program: Sinipyrstö project which works through art-based environmental education to strengthen and raise awareness of eco-social wellbeing and Vaara-Kainuu Art National Park campaign that aims to protect the old spruces, lush reed beds, flowing streams, and the mosaic of bogs of the Northern Kainuu area, same time increasing the knowledge and understanding of the role of art in the ecological transition and bringing people and communities together working towards it.
This residency is organized in collaboration with the Finnish Cultural Institute in New York.
