
Hisham Akira Bharoocha
Music Residency
Hisham Akira Bharoocha is a Japanese-born, mixed race (Japanese / Indian Myanmar) multi-disciplinary artist who concentrates on creating visual art, musical performances, and installations. Raised in southern California as well as Tokyo, Japan, Bharoocha touches on the mind’s intricacies and the search to understand how his multi-cultural background has influenced his life perspective. He has had solo exhibitions in Japan, New York, France, and The Netherlands.
Bharoocha was a founding member of Black Dice (1997-2004) as well as Pixeltan (DFA). He also was music director of the BOADRUM series (2007-2015) of large-scale drum performances led by the experimental Japanese rock group Boredoms, which he toured with as a member for eight years. Based on what he learned through BOADRUM, Bharoocha started the collective performance group IIII (read Four) alongside Brian Chase (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Ryan Sawyer, and Ben Vida. IIII has performed in notable venues such as Rockefeller Plaza, New York; Sydney Opera House; and Royal Festival Hall, London. Bharoocha has collaborated on site specific music performances with esteemed artists such as Doug Aitken and has performed improvisational sets with the likes of Lee Ranaldo, Otomo Yoshihide, Vijay Iyer, Keith Fullerton Whitman, Ikue Mori, Evicshen, Yoshimio, Eye Yamatsuka, Leila Bordreuil, and Miho Hatori. His solo electronic music is released under the moniker YOKUBARI and he is currently in the band Kill Alters.
