Second Sundays is our signature event series that engages Pioneer Works disciplines through live music, food, artists’ open studios, and programs.

 (2014-2019) is a multi-platform installation that casts real-life musicians, artists, and actors as bands on tour, and expands into a cross-generational, Trump–era commentary on contemporary culture and politics. It features members of Gang Gang Dance, Le Tigre, The Julie Ruin, MEN, Eartheater, MGMT, Light Asylum, and more.

Shot in real environments and situations, the core group of players improvised based on semi-scripted scenes. Because many of these performers are legends themselves in the New York City downtown scene, they are archetypes playing archetypes. The work revels in the sometimes hilarious—but always complex—band dynamics that the characters endure while touring, collaborating, and aging in a youth-driven music industry. As the players move in and out of character, blending fiction and real life, the film moves in and out of non-linear narrative and historical document. Shot from 2014 to 2018 at over 15 DIY music spaces in and around New York City—many of which have since shuttered their doors—the film acts as an urgent time capsule for the rapidly gentrifying city.

 also highlights the extensive and growing archive of live performance in NYC shot during the four-year production schedule and the raw footage from improvised scenes, while portraits of performers taken by Justine Kurland are arranged in a grid. ’s multi-platform, lens-based projects craft darkly comedic narratives of trauma and repressed memory around mass-culture experiences and youthful rites of passage. Using historical, literary and popular culture-based references, she addresses issues related to cultural production and societal malaise. Herwork has been screened and exhibited widely in the US and internationally, including at the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; MoMA PS1, NY; Miami Museum of Contemporary Art, FL; Brooklyn Museum; Deste Foundation for Contemporary Art, Athens; The International Film Festival Rotterdam, Rotterdam, Netherlands; and Museo Nacional Centro De Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid; and NY and on PBS and Spanish Television. Recently she had solo exhibitions at LA><, LA; Participant Inc and Fitzroy Gallery, both N; and solo screenings at the Museum of Modern Art, and The Kitchen, New York City. Parnes is a 2013 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellow, a 2014 NYFA recipient, and a 2016 Creative Capital Awardee. Carry You With Me: Ten Years of Portraits

, LJ Roberts’s first solo exhibition in New York City as well as first publication, is the result of a long-term, ongoing project, consisting of 26 six-by-four-inch embroidered portraits of the artist’s friends, collaborators, and lovers within New York City’s queer and trans communities. Stitched entirely by hand and typically completed during transit on subway trains, these embroideries illustrate how politics, culture, and identity manifest in both visible and subtle ways through encounters in daily life.

An artist perhaps best known for large-scale, collaged, textile works, Roberts spends up to one year stitching each portrait within the series, taking inspiration from both photographs and memory. As much a tribute to the subjects as they are to the public and private places that provide safe spaces for vital exchange, the images hone in on meticulously stitched details—from the letters that make up Zoe Leonard’s critically important 

 mural along the High Line, to the book covers and refrigerator magnets that distinguish a person’s home. Roberts also regards the backs of each embroidery—abstract networks of colorful threads layered atop one another, created entirely by happenstance—as integral to the works as the front images themselves. The artist considers the series as a way of dismantling the heteronormative tendencies of portraiture, and also of subverting conventional ideas of representation and abstraction by making each dependent on the other.

The exhibition will open in tandem with the publication of a companion book, wherein each illustration is paired with an anecdotal passage written by Roberts. These texts reflect on their deeply personal encounters and companionships with the depicted subjects, speaking to shared moments that are both mundane and significant. The book, which takes its name from the exhibition, includes a foreword by Sur Rodney (Sur), essays by Carmen Hermo and Theodore (ted) Kerr, and a conversation between the artist, Tirza True Latimer, and TT Takemoto. Together, these contributions further contextualize the series within Roberts’s practice and the histories that it was borne out of.

As Roberts notes within the book, “The embroideries are a ten-year record of my friendships and relationships, the politics that marked the decade, the fun I had with friends, the everyday action and resistance that these people practice, those who influence and inspire me, the elders who have mentored me, people who have collaborated with me.”

 is an artist working in installation, textiles, collage, and text. Their practice addresses queer and trans politics, material deviance, alternative kinship structures, archives, and narrative. Based in Brooklyn, the artist has exhibited work at institutions such as the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum, Toledo Museum of Art, The 8th Floor, Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art, Museum of the City of New York, Victoria and Albert Museum, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Spring/Break Art Show, La Mama Galleria, and Anthology Film Archives. Roberts is a 2021 Socrates Sculpture Park Artist Fellow, and has been an artist-in-residence at IASPIS, Ox-Bow School of Art, Queenslab, Textile Arts Center, Pioneer Works, and MacDowell. They were one of nine recipients of The White House Champions of Change Award for LGBTQI+ artists in 2015, and received the Women's Caucus for Art President's Award for Art and Activism in 2019.

Jordan Kisner is an essayist and cultural critic, and the author of the forthcoming, 

, which will be published by Farrar, Straus & Giroux in March 2020. Her work has appeared in 

, and others. Kisner is also the recipient of a Pushcart Prize. She is the former director of The Bellwether, teaches creative writing at Columbia University, and serves as a mentor-editor for the Op-Ed Project.

Suneil Sanzgiri is an artist, researcher, and filmmaker working to understand how systems of oppression are informed and reinforced by trauma, history, and memory. His work spans experimental film and video, animations, essays, and installations, and contends with questions of identity, heritage, culture, and diaspora. In 2017, Sanzgiri graduated from the Art, Culture and Technology program at MIT. His film 

 made its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January 2020, and his follow up film 

recently premiered at the New York Film Festival. His work has been screened extensively at festivals and galleries nationally and internationally.

Her work has been exhibited at Jeffrey Deitch Gallery, MoMA PS1, and the Whitney Museum of Art. She received the 2018 International Center of Photography Infinity Award in the applied category. She is a 2019 CatchLight Fellow.

Xenia Bond (b. 1992, London) works in sculpture and installation. She graduated from the Stäedelscule in Frankfurt under Judith Hopf and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. Bond’s exhibitions include: Husslehof, APT Gallery, Zona Mista, Studio Picknick, and Neue Alte Brücke. She is interested in the formal relationship of materials and their reception as emotives, and communicating external relationships in her life. Bond’s works are neither immersive nor “looking outside.” These polarities are avoided. Instead the aim is to provoke a reaction between the imagination of the self and the viewer. The drift of signs and possible narratives, both concrete and imagined, characterize Bond’s works.

She has exhibited at Muhlenberg College, Practice Gallery, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Museo de Artes Visuales, and elsewhere. Bitran has held residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, and more. Grants and awards include: The New York Trust Van Lier Fellowship, Hammersley Grant, Emergency Grant Foundation for Contemporary Arts, Jerome Foundation Grant for Emerging Filmmakers, 1st Prize Britney Spears Dance Challenge, 1st Prize UFO McDonald’s Painting Competition, 1st honorable mention at Bienal de Artes Mediales.

Her work has been exhibited at Hauser & Wirth, Gladstone Gallery, Museo d’arte Contemporanea di Roma, Kunste Werke, MoMa PS1, Participant Inc., American Fine Arts Co., Reena Spaulings, and James Fuentes Gallery. Bougatsos is a recipient of the Rema Hort Mann Foundation grant, and her work is included in The Astrup Fearnley Museet for Moderne Kunst and The Dikeou Collection.

She is interested in how systems, rules, and regulations change cultures, beliefs, and rituals, affecting individuals from within. The juxtaposition between the real and the fictional, the rational and the absurd is a recurring theme in her work.

Wang is one of Mozilla’s 2019 Creative Media Awards recipients, and a research fellow at the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts from 2019-2020. She has shown her work at venues including New York Transit Museum, Ujazdowski Castle Centre for Contemporary Art, Spokane Public Library, and CultureHub.

 curated by Water McBeer in 2020. In 2015, Hooker founded Façadomy, an intersectional publishing project focused on paradox and desire. Hooker’s work puts a distorted lens on reality by positioning elements of design, architecture, and popular culture in various states of transition, bringing forward the unstable subject and mutable nature of reality.

In anticipation of the forthcoming publication PÒTOPRENS: The Urban Artists of Port-au-Prince, Pioneer Works re-stages a selection of the works originally presented in its 2018 titular exhibition. Printed in both English and Haitian Kreyòl, PÒTOPRENS is a map-like reflection of the urban landscape and a new geography of popular production. The city of Port-au-Prince is a polyphonic metropolis that declares its past via multiple voices; in this volume, the city’s complex present is evoked through artworks, images, testimonies, and essays.

November Second Sundays is presented in partnership with Haiti Cultural Exchange. Haiti Cultural Exchange (HCX) is a nonprofit organization founded in 2009 to develop, present and promote the cultural expressions of the Haitian people. HCX is a producer and presenter of music, dance, performance, art, film, and literary arts of the Haitian Diaspora, together with associated educational and public programs. HCX strives to increase access to arts programming for underrepresented, low-income minority communities; increase knowledge and appreciation of Haitian culture among the general public; foster positive cultural identity among Haitian Americans; and cultivate a sense of community & civic engagement.

Exhibition Scavenger Hunt

Vivianne Hamilton is a Brooklyn-based floral designer operating under the moniker Vivi Fleurz. Her work is a reaction to a rapidly evolving world of fluctuating trends, fantasy, and the shifting environment we all live in. Her designs can at once evoke a natural, woody, and earthy vibe, at the same time juxtaposed against a world of artificial, saturated, and hard-edged textures.

Dave Kim the Potter uses direct influence from his Korean heritage to apply developed aesthetics to his functional pottery. Currently working in Brooklyn, NY, he believes that creating historic Korean pottery preserves a culture that is slowly dissipating in modern society.  
Each piece of pottery Kim creates collects elements of form, decoration, color and material from various traditional Korean pottery styles, individually offering a wide variety of styles such as Sang-gam (Korean inlay technique), Baek-ja (porcelain-ware, typically known for Moonjars), or Bun-cheong (a technique that uses stamps). 
Producing work that has been made for centuries, Kim still challenges the limits of what can be done by following the ways of Korean pottery. His experimental interest has enabled him to create new bodies of work that stray from the tradition yet are still very grounded at the core of what Korean pottery is: simplicity that represents natural, unpretentious beauty.

In this episode of The Broadcast Monologues, the witty and thought-provoking Irish satirist, author, and musician known as Blindboy Boatclub riffs on “Value: Towards a Dialectic on Christ’s Foreskin.” Delving into the claims of authentic ownership of Christ’s foreskin by several Catholic churches around the world, Blindboy muses on the relationship between relics and scarcity, and the ebbs and flows of what is deemed valuable in our modern era.

Digital artist and filmmaker Eva Papamargariti provides a stunning, impressionistic visual context for Blindboy’s monologue. Opening and closing music are by Joel Robinow.

On the occasion of the 4:30–6pm screening of three films by Visual Arts Resident Suneil Sanzgiri at November Second Sundays, the artist has assembled a new three-channel installation of “Golden Jubilee” with 3D printed artifacts, framed works, sculptural elements, and writing.

This animation and speculative fiction explores a feminist historicization of Pakistan as the first ‘Muslim nuclear state’ through state and familial
archives. The script is written through the canon of patriarchal state structure via a fictional, populist, contemporary Urdu author; subversively
implicating the bodies of citizens, specifically women, as the containers to perpetuate state sanctioned notions of love, science, and nature. The
narrative inverts this ‘In the Name of God’ rhetoric initially used to push the Pakistani nuclear project.


Umber Majeed: In the Name of Hypersurface of the Present

Tamar Ettun is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York. She has had exhibitions and performances at Pioneer Works, PERFORMA, Art Omi Sculpture Garden, Sculpture Center, Madison Square Park, The Barrick Museum, The Watermill Center, e-flux, Socrates Sculpture Park, Indianapolis Museum of Art, The Jewish Museum, Fridman Gallery, among others. 
Ettun received awards and fellowships from The Pollock Krasner Foundation, Chinati Foundation, Moca Tucson Artist Residency, MacDowell Fellowship, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Art Production Fund, and Iaspis. Ettun founded The Moving Company, an artists collective creating performances in public spaces and a social engagement project with Brooklyn teens hosted by The Brooklyn Museum. 
Ettun received her MFA from Yale University in 2010 where she was awarded the Alice English Kimball Fellowship. She studied at Cooper Union in 2007, while earning her BFA from Bezalel Academy, Jerusalem. Ettun teaches at Columbia University School of Arts, and The New School Parsons School of Design.

Get a glimpse of Red Hook through the lens of 10 young filmmakers! This screening will feature the short films of Jesus Castro, Justin Brown, Naomi Pyle, Rana Alzandanj, Ramisa Asma, Damien Borges, Alfred Edwards, Dena Igusti, Danny Chicon-Ramirez, and Phoenix Na produced during Hook Arts Media's Digital Boot Camp Summer Program, facilitated by filmmaker and educator Jordan Campbell.

Peacemaking is a traditional Native American form of justice that promotes healing, accountability, and growth. The goal is to create a safe space for all to repair harm and restore relationships. When COVID-19 forced the Red Hook Community Justice Center’s Peacemaking program to function remotely, Pioneer Works stayed connected to our Peacemakers through regular dialogues. During an especially challenging time for all, we spoke about our lives, community, and the fast-changing world. Now we are opening up these dialogues to others in Red Hook and beyond. We invite you to participate in the circle process and engage with one another through purposeful community conversation. Conversations will be facilitated by Jacqueline Renaud-Rivera, Program Manager of Peacemaking at Red Hook Community Justice Center.

Antidote is a multimedia work by new media artist LaJuné McMillian and choreographer Marguerite Hemmings that reflects year-long exploration of healing through physical movement and digital technology. First presented in 2020 as a video piece, this iteration of Antidote is a live performance work developed by McMillian and Hemmings in collaboration with a cast of 6 young artists from South Brooklyn Community Highschool in Red Hook and University Neighborhood Highschool on the Lower East Side. Together, they will share how motion capture technology and dance can serve as tools for personal growth and collective liberation.

The goal of Cozy Femme is to bring the utility and therapeutic aspects of crafting to communities where it has been considered a lost or non-functional art form. Cozy Femme strives to create a process in which craft, conversations, and co-creation can be a form of medicine. For many, this past year has represented long stretches of isolation and social disconnection. The Chat + Craft is a distilled experience of using art as a gateway to open and vulnerable emotional expression in a safe, comfortable environment.

Alexandra Jean-Joseph is an educator, dancer and choreographer. As the Artistic Director of drum and dance ensemble Imamou Lele, she currently produces cultural material and folkloric works of Haiti through traditional dance. As a manbo of Haitian Vodou, she strives to preserve the connection between Haitian Folkloric Dance and Vodou rites and to promote dance as an experience where spirit and art meet. She currently practices with her spiritual family at Le Temple D’Olohoum in Queens, New York. Le Temple D’Olohoum is dedicated to the observance of Vodou in its most religious aspect. It focuses on creating a physical, mental, moral, and spiritual environment for the practice of Vodou. 

Sky Menesky is an educator, percussionist, and cultural activist. He currently works as a middle school teacher in Brooklyn, New York while hosting “The Sky Menesky Podcast”. The podcast is a sans-frontiere radio program committed to promoting, defending, and educating Haitians and non-Haitians on the importance of Haiti, and advocating for cultural, economic, and political change in our community here within the diaspora. As the Music Director of drum and dance ensemble Imamou Lele, Sky aims to protect and promote Haiti’s folkloric traditions and continue to preserve Haiti’s cultural heritage through traditional songs and drum rhythms. 

Imamou Lele is an ensemble of dancers, drummers, and vocalists sewn together in the spirit of Haiti. Under the artistic direction of Alexandra Jean-Joseph and the music direction of Sky Menesky, Imamou Lele aims to promote and preserve Haiti’s cultural heritage through traditional song, music, and movement.

Join Brooklyn-based artist William Mullan for a presentation on the apple's sweeping history with us, from it's early roots in the Miocene to its intersection with migration, capitalism, and culture. Assembled for the first time in New York, Suneil Sanzgiri’s recent body of work (2019 - 2021) explores the richness and density of questions surrounding identity, memory, diaspora, and decolonization in South Asia. Blending 16mm film, desktop aesthetics, 3D renderings, and direct animation, Sanzgiri’s films utilize an aesthetics of distance and proximity to gesture to tensions, possibilities, and replications of what we find when we search for ourselves in the remnants of colonial histories. Spanning events and figures like the liberation of Goa in 1961, the 1955 Bandung Conference, the caste abolitionist B.R. Ambedkar, the poet Agha Shahid Ali, and the continued occupation of Kashmir, “Borobar Jagtana” takes its title from a line in “Golden Jubilee” (2021) loosely translated to “continuously living, surviving” in Sanzgiri’s father’s native language of Konkani. On the occasion of this screening, Sanzgiri has assembled a new three-channel installation of “Golden Jubilee” with 3D printed artifacts, framed works, sculptural elements, and writing. He will be joined by artist, filmmaker and writer Tiffany Sia for a post-screening Q&A.

Brooklyn Darkroom supports analog photographers by offering resources which close the gap between photography production and travel. For dedicated artist practitioners, we provide month long residencies on the road in The CyanoVan, a VW Eurovan camper, and post production access to facilities in the Brooklyn Darkroom. We are committed to promoting analog photography especially focusing on documentary work, collaborations, and visions from underrepresented backgrounds. We encourage self roaming freedom and self determination. For at least one hundred years the American road trip has been a great mode for artistic production, a profound way for visual artists to map their ideas around America and its definition and that spirit lives on with our contemporary photographers.

With a unique and transfixing sound he calls 'Roots/Blues', Paul Beaubrun weaves his impeccable guitar skills, rich vocals, musical ingenuity and cultural history together; all while performing a smooth melange of both English, French and Creole (the native tongue of his Haitian roots).

Paul has played alongside some of the world's best artists including Ms. Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, Arcade Fire, Jackson Browne and Bob Weir. Worldwide performances include venues such as The Beacon Theater and Radio City Music Hall in NYC, Massey Hall in Toronto, The Ryman Theatre in Nashville, The House of Blues in Chicago, The Montreal Jazz Festival, Festival Internationale Nuits d'Afrique in Montreal, Le Trianon in Paris, The Paleo Festival in Switzerland, No Siesta Fiesta in Norway. These continued accomplishments make him one of the few artists coming out of Haiti to garner worldwide success.

Paul’s album titled 'Vilnerab', released in 2015, soared directly to #1 on iTunes in the World Music category, receiving rave reviews. In 2016, he was nominated for a Dora Award by the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts for ‘Outstanding Sound Design/Composition’ in the production of Espwa/Espoir.   Paul’s most recent album, "Ayibobo", released in May of 2018 on Ropeadope Records, sees Paul's further evolution of sound into Rock/Roots/Blues music.
