, an ambitious mixed reality experience developed by Tin Drum in collaboration with architect Sou Fujimoto and directed by Yoyo Munk. This marks

’s North American premiere, following its debut at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum in 2021 during the London Design Festival.

Bridging art, science, music, and technology, 

 comprises a unique and evolving mixed reality experience that envelops visitors within a new realm of physicality, visuality, and sound. The experience explores contrasts between individual and collective ways of being, and between non-human and human-made architectures, drawing inspiration from natural structures in the upper atmosphere and the deep sea.

Visitors are invited to experience the project using optically transparent glasses that overlay virtual architecture onto the real world, transporting them to a sensory realm, unlike anything seen before. Through the glasses, thousands of hanging vertical columns appear in Pioneer Works’ cavernous Main Hall, responding to the collective behavior of the space’s visitors. As it evolves, the architecture of 

 carries with it memories of previous iterations, changing and transforming as it interacts with new audiences.

Sound is an equally key component, with a changing soundscape accompanying the experience. For this presentation of Medusa at Pioneer Works, Brooklyn-based composer 

 has written new music on a Yamaha Disklavier inspired by legendary composer Ryuichi Sakamoto. Her work expands upon the score that Sakamoto originally composed for Medusa's first iteration, which spatialized and combined recordings of undersea drones. Moran will also activate the exhibition through a live, durational performance series, taking place over the course of five hours on Saturdays, March 25, and April 1, 8, and 15.

 addresses themes of architecture and nature, permanence and fragility, signal and noise, individual and collective. It provides a space for contemplation in times of rapid change, where divisions that may have once felt solid are disintegrating and reshaping themselves, a mirror through which we might see one reflection of the nature of our foundational assumptions and the consequences that have emerged from them,” says Munk. “We are thrilled to collaborate with Pioneer Works to bring the experience—and this sense of wonder—to new audiences.”

In addition to a series of durational performances held in the installation, Pioneer Works’s 2023 presentation of 

 will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated compendium with contributions from Munk, Fujimoto, artist James Bridle, entomologist Seirian Sumner, and writers Octavia Bright, and Veronica Strang. The publication will explore themes present in the work such as the relationships between architecture and nature, permanence and fragility, the individual and the collective, and signal and noise. It will be published and distributed by Hurtwood Press, London, to be released in March 2023, with copies available at Pioneer Works at the time of the installation’s opening.

 is the world’s premier studio producing content for mixed reality devices. Founded in 2016 by Todd Eckert, this collective of artists, engineers, designers, and technologists blends uniquely dimensional form with the real world to create experiences impossible through other media. The results are without modern precedent, and are changing the definition of engagement in recorded performance. Tin Drum creates content in collaboration with world-renowned artists, creators, and performers. In partnership with Christie’s, Tin Drum was the first to sell a mixed reality production at auction.

is a scientist and artist working with emerging media to explore novel directions within shared experience, architecture of virtual environments, and interactivity at the scale of the collective. Their mixed reality directorial debut, 

, premiered as the headlining installation of the London Design Festival in 2021 and was heralded by Dezeen as one of the top ten installation works of that year worldwide. They hold a PhD in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley.

 was born in Hokkaido, Japan in 1971. After graduating from the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Engineering at Tokyo University, he established “Sou Fujimoto Architects” in 2000. In 2016, his work “Mille Arbres” won the 1st prize for one of the 23 sites in the French competition, “Réinventer Paris,” following the triumph in the Invited International Competition for the New Learning Center at Paris-Saclay's Ecole Polytechnique in 2015 and in the International Competition for the Second Folly of Montpellier and “Liget Budapest House of Hungarian Music” in 2014 when he was awarded “The Wall Street Journal Architecture Innovator Award.” In 2013, he became the youngest architect to accept the invitation to design the annual summer pavilion for the Serpentine Gallery in London. In 2012, he participated in the exhibition for the Japan Pavilion in the International Architecture Exhibition – “La Biennale di Venezia,” which was awarded “The Golden Lion for Best National Participation.” Among other multiple awards, he was granted the first prize of the international competition for “Taiwan Tower” and “Beton Hala Waterfront Center” in 2011, and the Grand Prize for “AR Awards 2006” (Children’s Center for Psychiatric Rehabilitation). His most important works include “the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2013” (2013), “House NA” (2011), “Musashino Art University Museum & Library” (2010), “Final Wooden House”(2008), and “House N” (2008). Forthcoming projects include Polytechnique University, France (2023) and the Town Office and Cultural Complex at HIgashi Kagura, Hokkaido (2024).

 is a pianist and composer from New York. Her most recent record "Ultraviolet" for prepared piano and electronics was released by Warp Records in 2018. As the main producer for her solo albums, her intricately arranged electro-acoustic compositions have been described as accomplishing "the rare feat of making the work of a single individual sound like the artistic output of a veritable creative army." As a collaborator, she has worked with a wide array of artists, including FKA Twigs, Margaret Leng-Tan, Kelsey Lu, Yves Tumor, Malibu, Oneohtrix Point Never, and The Avalanches. Moran’s next album, a set of compositions for Disklavier, is set to be released in Fall 2023.

Medusa

Tin Drum: Medusa

co-presented by Mishkin Gallery and Pioneer Works, marks the first institutional survey of New York-born artist Aura Rosenberg. This two-venue exhibition traces the artist’s trajectory from early paintings of the 1970s to her more recent endeavors in photography, film, sculpture, and installation. Throughout her five decades long career in New York and Berlin, Rosenberg has moved through diverse styles, preferring to work thematically and serially while often returning to ideas from past projects. The exhibition also includes several previously unseen works, and Rosenberg’s collaborations with artists like Ei Arakawa, Mary Heilmann, Mike Kelley, Louise Lawler, and Haim Steinbach, all of which chronicle the breadth of her multifaceted career.

Rosenberg’s practice challenges how images produce and reproduce notions of spectatorship, gender, family, and history—that is, the conditions of everyday life. In this way, she examines how vernacular images naturalize and normalize meanings through which people understand themselves in the world.

Several series on view in the exhibition, such as 

 (1991–96), involve feminist gestures of convening communities, be it the children of her friends or the men in her social circles. Others, like 

(1989–93), comment more broadly on collective memory and the shifting, socially produced meanings of public space and the bodies that inhabit them. Her series 

 (2013–ongoing) reference Walter Benjamin’s as well as her family’s history of exile from Nazi Germany, as well as more recent histories of exile worldwide.


 co-published by Mishkin Gallery and Pioneer Works Press and designed by Daniel Kent. The publication pairs full-color plates of the artist’s work alongside newly commissioned and archival texts penned by a dynamic roster of artists, historians, and curators that includes Lena Dunham, Alaina Claire Feldman, Matt Keegan, Claire Koron Elat, Laura López Paniagua, Tim Martin, John Miller, Bob Nickas, Barbara Piwowarska, Lumi Tan, and Alexandra Tell. Notably, this publication will be the first to engage with Rosenberg’s entire oeuvre to date.

(b. 1949, New York, NY) received a BA from Sarah Lawrence College, completed the Whitney Independent Study Program in 1971, and received an MA from Hunter College (CUNY) in 1974. She currently lives and works in New York and Berlin. Rosenberg has held solo exhibitions including:

Aura Rosenberg: What Is Psychedelic

Mimi Bai was born in Xi’an, China, and is based in Brooklyn, NY. Her practice encompasses sculpture, drawing, and film and her work draws connections between labor, assimilation, camouflage, and survival as both a lived reality and fantasy. Bai has presented work at Artists Space, A.I.R. Gallery, BRIC, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Her films have screened at Rooftop Films, the Rockaway Film Festival, and the Maryland Film Festival. Bai was a SIP Fellow at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop and NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow for Interdisciplinary Work. Bai attended the Whitney Independent Study Program and is a graduate of Alfred University (MFA Sculpture) and Wesleyan University (BA Sociology).

Mimi Bai

Natalia Lassalle-Morillo (B. Puerto Rico) is a theater artist, filmmaker, performer and visual artist. Melding theatrical performance, intuitive experimental ethnography, and collaborations with non-professional performers, Natalia’s practice centers on excavating imagined and archived history, decentralizing canonical narratives through embodied reenactments, and challenging the prioritization of written history by foregrounding instead the creation of new mythologies.

Natalia earned an MFA in Theatre Directing from CalArts and a BFA in Drama from the Experimental Theatre Wing at NYU. Residencies and fellowships include: Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship, Amant Foundation (Brooklyn, NY), Mass Moca Studio Residency & Fonderie Darling in Montréal, QC. Her work is part of the KADIST collection, and her films, installations, & performances have been presented in museums, festivals, performance venues, and unconventional spaces, internationally. She teaches Film & Video at MICA.

Natalia Lassalle-Morillo

Finnegan Shannon is an artist. They experiment with forms of access that intervene in ableist structures with humor, earnestness, and rage. Some of their recent work includes Anti-Stairs Club Lounge, an ongoing project that gathers people together who share an aversion to stairs; Alt Text as Poetry, a collaboration with Bojana Coklyat that explores the expressive potential of image description; and Do You Want Us Here or Not, a series of benches and cushions designed for exhibition spaces. Their work has been supported by a Wynn Newhouse Award, an Eyebeam fellowship, and grants from Art Matters Foundation, Canada Council for the Arts, and the Disability Visibility Project. They live and work in Brooklyn, NY.

Finnegan Shannon

Le’Andra LeSeur is a multidisciplinary artist whose work encompasses a range of media including video, installation, photography, painting, and performance. LeSeur’s body of work, a celebration of Blackness, queerness, and femininity, seeks to dismantle systems of power and achieve transcendence and liberation through perseverance. Through the insertion of her body and voice into her work, she provides her audience with an opportunity to contemplate themes such as identity, family, Black grief and joy, the experience of invisibility, and what it means to take up space as a queer Black woman—a rejection of the stereotypes which attempt to push these identities to the margins.

Le’Andra LeSeur

Angelo Madsen Minax is a multi-disciplinary artist, filmmaker, and educator. His projects consider how human relationships are woven through personal and collective histories, cultures, and kinships, with specific attention to subcultural experience, phenomenology, and the politics of desire. Madsen's works have shown at Berlinale, Toronto International Film Festival, BAM CinemaFest, New York Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, Anthology Film Archives, British Film Institute, and others. He is a recipient of awards and fellowships from the Sundance Film Institute, BAVC Media, New York State Council on the Arts, LEF Foundation, and has participated in residencies at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Core Program at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Yaddo, Bemis Center for Contemporary Art, and others. His film, "North By Current" (2021), aired on season 34 of POV (PBS), was nominated for an Independent Spirit award, and won the Cinema Eye Honors Spotlight award, Best Writing award from the IDA and numerous festival jury prizes. A New York Times Critics Pick, "North By Current" has been called "A beautiful, complex wonder of a film," by Rolling Stone and "A titanic work" by Criterion. Angelo Madsen is currently an Associate Professor of Time-Based Media at the University of Vermont, a Queer|Art Mentor, and a current Guggenheim Fellow.

Jamaal Peterman (b. 1990, Fort Lauderdale, FL; lives and works in Brooklyn, NY/MD) received his MFA at Pratt Institute (2019) and BFA from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (2014). He has been included in exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Art (MoCADA), Public ArtFund, New York; the University of Chicago; Kavi Gupta, Chicago; James Fuentes, New York and Vigo Gallery, London.
Peterman has been awarded the Peter S. Reed Foundation grant, commissioned by MoMA PS1 and has undertaken residencies at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, MASS MoCA, Wassaic Project Residency, Fountainhead Residency.

Jamaal Peterman

Yehwan is a Korean-born web artist and designer. Yehwan's work centers on finding the discomfort hidden in the excessively comfortable web environments in order to address systemic inequality. The work reveals the inconvenience that users who do not belong to the main user group experience and criticizes the overgeneralization of user groups and the oversimplification of web interfaces that pursue excessive comfort and consistency only. Yehwan creates anti-friendly websites and satirizes web conventions by undermining the general understanding of web design and subverting common user-experience behaviors. She pursues diversity above consistency and efficiency.

Yehwan Song

Or Zubalsky is an artist and educator based in a part of Lenapehoking also known as Brooklyn. They explore how coding participates in practices of political resistance. Or’s projects originate in software and are encountered as digital platforms, physical objects, installations, gatherings, and performances. Their work is compelled by curiosity regarding the ways in which the composition and execution of code manifest as political action, capable of both healing and shifting power relations. With a commitment to unlearn and resist settler-colonialism, they engage the complexity that software-based systems afford in order to reflect on, criticize, and intervene in existing systems of power.

Or Zubalsky

Sage Vousé is a self-taught multimedia artist based in Brooklyn who deals in otherness, physicality, and transformation by way of ceramics and virtual environments.

In sculpture, they combine experimental and flesh-like designs with profiles that evoke the classic and the antique; the decanter crumbling and covered in flowering warts, the bouquet banished to the bottom of the sea. These sculptures are captured as digital objects which form a language with which to build out immersive worlds and expand on emotive moments.

They enjoy mixing textures, materials, scale and reality.

Sage Vousé

Veronica “Vern” Avola is a composer, multimedia artist, instructor and champion of friendship, born in Italy and based in Portland, Oregon. She founded EMS Records.

Avola’s solo sound works uses deep electronic sounds to geomap the hidden layers that also come with a given “present moment”; from the guttural subterranean or the hallways of the earthly punk and DIY culture to consensual abduction and flight. Avola’s compositions hold space for these physical stretches that become emblems of safety when society faces a truth in zero control within a political predestination. In this process Avola brings an ability back to the listener to think and exist outside of man’s algorithm.

Since 2007, Avola has performed this work internationally and has released several albums.

Say siphonophores 5 times fast! Or better yet build a community designed siphonores mobile with the Learn and Engage team. Inspired by Pioneer Work’s latest exhibit, Tin Drum’s: Medusa, young participants will generate self-designed garlands using natural materials from Pioneer Works’ garden and various arts and crafts materials to attach onto our very own deep sea creature!

Tin Drum: <i>Medusa</i> inspired Mobiles

Contribute to a collective animation set against architectural elements and historical maps of the Brooklyn waterfront while bringing life to your own personal items or drawings. Part of On the Waterfront - A View from the Coast (Line), an exhibition by CENTRAL BOOKING in collaboration with New York Historical Society at BWAC (481 Van Brunt Street). Results will be combined and participants will be credited by name in an animation that will be shared at a later date. Family friendly, children under 13 need to be accompanied by an adult. Groups of 2-3 can sign up for a 15-minute session.


Moving Through Brooklyn, a stop-motion animation workshop with Susan Rostow

Join us for a demon-trapping performance with Alumni Resident Tamar Ettun and collaborator Amalia Rosa Mayorga. The performance is participatory and in communion with Lilit, the Empathic Demon. Tamar will conjure Lilit to help visitors identify and trap a demon from 12:30-3pm. From 3-3:30pm, the performance will conclude with a collective ritual to release the demons. How to Trap a Demon is open to all ages, regardless of experience or skill level.

Join Mishkin Gallery and Pioneer Works to celebrate the release of What Is Psychedelic, a new co-publication that pairs full-color plates of Aura Rosenberg's work with essays by artists, historians, and curators that offer the first comprehensive overview of her oeuvre. Contributors Alexandra Tell, Lumi Tan, and Bob Nickas will read excerpts of their texts and Aura Rosenberg will be present to sign copies of the book.

From 4-5pm, Garnette Cadogan joins PW Director of Publishing Joshua Jelly-Schapiro for a conversation on psychogeography, urban justice, and “walking into our best thoughts.”
