Mahjong Palace

Mahjong Palace is a social mahjong club that teaches and plays Hong Kong-style mahjong, the most widely played version of the game worldwide.

The evening will begin with an artist-led walkthrough of In Light of Innocence by RaĂșl de Nieves, followed by playing within the exhibition. A drinks bar and a smorgasbord of Asian snacks and appetizers will be offered, along with a curated music playlist.

Tickets must be booked in advance and they guarantee a seat at either a Teaching or Open Play table. Please make this selection when booking your ticket. Led by experienced players, teaching tables are perfect for absolute and intermediate beginners. Open Play tables are for players who are at least comfortable playing ‘3 Points Minimum’ independently; Mahjong Palace aims to group participants with others at a similar skill level, to ensure a balanced and enjoyable game.

About Mahjong Palace

Founded in NYC in September 2024, Mahjong Palace is a social mahjong club that reimagines the mahjong experience. MJP hosts engaging teaching and playing sessions at thoughtfully selected venues, from art galleries and cultural spaces to restaurants and members-only clubs.

“I grew up playing mahjong in Singapore, in a home ruled by my formidable grandmother, Dolly. But it was never just about the game. My memories are of balmy evenings, the air thick with the scent of tropical fruit from the garden, mingling with the rich, spicy aromas of Dolly’s Peranakan cooking. Laughter and lively chatter spilled through the house as friends gathered around the mahjong table, the rhythmic clatter of tiles a steady backdrop to gossip shared and stories retold. It was a feeling as much as a memory—of warmth, of belonging, of time slowing down in the company of others. Now, in NYC, a place I have come to call home, I want to recreate that same magic of bringing people together through mahjong.”

This program takes place within artist RaĂșl de Nieves’s site-specific installation, In Light of Innocence. Learn more about the exhibition here.
