Gregory Kloehn: Pioneer Works Recording Studio (2015)
The Pioneer Works Recording Studio was conceptualized by Gregory Kloehn, an Oakland-based artist who uses found materials to build unique mobile shelters for homeless residents. Kloehn first became known for his designs in 2011, when he built a home in Brooklyn by outfitting a dumpster with granite countertops, hardwood floors, a rooftop deck, and plumbing.
With the help of Gardner Allen, Martin Cicac, Jason Grunwald, Bryan Humphrey, and Julian Townley, five 20-by-8-feet containers were stacked and welded atop one another, forming a utilitarian structure that houses Pioneer Works’ music recording studio on the second floor. Thomas Clapp of Mexican Summer helped engineer and design the studio interior, while a rooftop and ground floor became, respectively, an observation deck and an outdoor bar.
