Director of Advancement

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Director of Advancement will be a motivated, engaging leader of the development team and within Pioneer Works as a whole. They will partner with the Executive Director, senior staff, and the 21-member board of trustees to formulate a comprehensive fundraising strategy, manage fundraising for an ambitious capital campaign, develop and find innovative ways to grow annual contributed revenue, and manage a stewardship plan for existing donors. There is opportunity to build and reimagine the now five person development department; PW welcomes energy and innovation in every discipline – including fundraising.

The Director will be an experienced professional with both frontline and operational experience, able to speak persuasively about Pioneer Works’ mission and invite others into the organization’s unique story. They should feel comfortable making data-driven decisions, bringing an intelligent, critical eye to past fundraising efforts and, when needed, to advocate for new directions and projects.

The successful Director will be an excellent manager with the ability to set ambitious goals and ensure the development team has the training, tools, and support to meet them. Pioneer Works is in a moment of evolution and growth; the ideal candidate will have the ability to work at a strategic organizational level, helping to set the organization’s future direction and raise funds to support it.

An organizational goal, and opportunity for the Director, is to increase the earned income pipeline through strategic developments to the retail department, additional ticketed concerts in the evenings, bolstering the membership and space rental programs, and establishing an income model for our visual magazine, Pioneer Works Broadcast.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the development team to effectively engage donors, board members, and other stakeholders to achieve annual and campaign goals. The team currently consists of an Associate Director of Partnerships, Senior Manager of Special Events, Development Coordinator, and two Development Assistants.
  • Provide clear direction and goals for the development staff; ensure they have the tools, training, support, and professional development to be effective in their roles; foster a culture of collaboration so that each area of fundraising amplifies and leverages the work of others on the team.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Executive Director, collaborating on high-level solicitations across all gift types; ensure that the ED is appropriately engaged in development and stakeholder activities.
  • Manage a portfolio of top prospects and donors; cultivate, solicit, and close major gifts from influential and mission-aligned donors.
  • Develop annual fundraising strategies in collaboration with the team for the following income streams: foundation and government, fundraising and cultivation events, rentals, membership, and individual giving.
  • Build an effective strategy for creating and growing earned income streams across PW’s departments and activities.
  • Continue to expand Pioneer Works’ network beyond current donors and identify prospects who are excited by PW’s ambitious mission and multidisciplinary programs.
  • Oversee non-artistic aspects of annual fundraising events.
  • Ensure that donors feel appreciated and engaged at the highest levels.

QUALIFICATIONS

Pioneer Works has a full time staff of 38 and is a highly collaborative environment that requires an energetic and experienced development professional who is passionate about the work of the organization. The ideal candidate will have the emotional intelligence necessary to manage successfully and to build meaningful connections with donors.

  • At least 10+ years of experience leading leading a development team at a dynamic non-profit organization
  • Significant experience as a frontline fundraiser cultivating and soliciting major gifts.
  • A strong track record for overseeing development operations and strategies. Previous experience working on a capital campaign preferred.
  • Superior interpersonal and listening skills, with a proven ability to successfully interact and collaborate with a variety of internal and external partners.
  • Background in individual and institutional giving, with demonstrated success in growing a donor base beyond an organization’s connected constituency.
  • An outcomes-focused, goal-centric, and data-driven orientation to fundraising
  • Ability to thrive in an interconnected ecosystem of staff and collaborate with a range of colleagues and departments
  • Ability to interact effectively with the Executive Director and the senior team, board members, staff, donors, and other stakeholders.

COMPENSATION

  • Salary range $150,000 to 190,000, commensurate with experience
  • Health, dental, vision, 401(k), and short-term disability insurances in addition to paid family leave, progressive maternal and parental leave, and unlimited paid time off.
