Self Defense with Guro Kristen Cabildo and Caroline Garcia

Tech Resident Caroline Garcia's work is partially translated through her own physical and psychological movements derived from Filipino Martial Arts (FMA). Learn more about Garcia's work while learning the physical skills necessary to escape an attack with Guro Kristen Cabildo. Garcia and Cabildo will teach participants read body language and orient to danger in their environment. By drawing on techniques and concepts from FMA, participants will learn how to optimize their chances of survival in a dangerous confrontation.

Date: This in-person workshop will meet once on Sunday, August 15 from 1-2:30pm. Social distancing will be in effect.

Price: $30

Audience: Open to all. This workshop is designed to give people with no previous martial art experience an introduction to a practical set of self-preservation tools that can be used for immediate application.

Materials: Please wear sneakers and comfortable clothing.

Caroline Garcia is a culturally promiscuous, interdisciplinary artist working across live performance and video. Garcia’s recent works include Flygirl, developed at EMPAC’s 2016/17 residency program, and performances at the Manila Biennale, Art Central Hong Kong, and the Vera List Center in 2018. That same year, she was one of the eight artists selected nationwide for Primavera: Young Australian Artists at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. In 2019, she presented at Spring/Break Art Fair, Movement Research at Judson Church, Smack Mellon, Creative Time SummitX, and was a resident at The Studios at MASS MoCA. Garcia is a 2020 resident at ISCP and an OPEN CALL 2021 artist at The Shed.

Guro Kristen Cabildo is a Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts instructor. She has been training in martial arts for 20 years. She is an instructor under the legendary Guro Dan Inosanto, best friend and training partner of the late Bruce Lee. In addition, Kristen has experience in boxing, muay thai kickboxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and silat. She is also a trauma-informed social worker, personal trainer, and intuitive coach. She believes that our bodies hold our personal and collective histories, but through an intentional mind, body, spirit practice, we can retell our stories based on healing and transformation.
