Join artist Jonathan Ojekunle and Red Hook Art Project for a hands-on community art workshop inspired by the beauty and symbolism of African patterns and geometric design at House 11 in Nolan Park, a historic house on Governors Island that RHAP has transformed into a live stu­dio, gallery, and class­room. Participants of all ages will explore how repeating shapes, colors, and symbols can tell stories, express ideas, and celebrate cultural traditions.

Each participant will create a colorful patterned canvas using reusable stencils, freehand designs, and bold color combinations. Together, these unique artworks will be assembled into one large collaborative mural that reflects the creativity and diversity of the community.

Throughout the workshop, participants will:

• Learn about African-inspired pattern traditions and the meaning of color and repetition.
• Explore rhythm, balance, and geometric design through hands-on artmaking.
• Experiment with stencils, markers, and painting techniques to create layered patterns.
• Contribute their artwork to a collective community mural displayed at the end of the session.

Participate level: No prior art experience is needed. This workshop encourages creativity, collaboration, and cultural exploration for all ages!Class cost: This class is free to attend. Registration is required.

Jonathan Ojekunle is a Brooklyn, NY based artist who specializes in portraits. He was born and raised in Oyo state, Nigeria to a father who was an artist and a mother who is a teacher. Jonathan earned a Bachelor of Arts from Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife Nigeria. He recently completed his Masters of Fine Art, with a concentration in sculpture, at CUNY Brooklyn College, Brooklyn NY. Over the years, Jonathan has worked on various commissions for individuals, government and professionals. Moving to America was a transformational experience for him. His new portraits are an effort to understand how he sees himself and in a new environment.
