Minds and Machines

Humans aspire to build machines that think—but the algorithms that currently control and influence so much of contemporary life are far from thinking, sentient beings. And yet, these seemingly mindless formulas are embedded with the values of their creators. What are the implications of an AI evolved from greedy algorithms and poor intentions? PW Director of Sciences, Janna Levin, is joined by cognitive scientist Prof. Gary Marcus and mathematician Dr. Cathy O’Neil to learn more. The three ponder if our minds are machines—or if machines will soon acquire minds. ♦
