Second Sundays is a free event series that engages Pioneer Works disciplines through live music, food, artists’ open studios, and interactive programs.

From May through October 2021, Pioneer Works will host Narrative Arts and Alumni Residents as well as occasional public programming in Governors Island's historic house, Nolan Park 8B.

Joshua Jelly-Schapiro is a geographer and writer whose work often focuses on place, race, and how human difference is thought about and acted on in the world. He is the author of Island People: The Caribbean and the World, and co-editor, with Rebecca Solnit, of Nonstop Metropolis: A New York City Atlas. Jelly-Schapiro teaches at NYU and is a regular contributor to The New York Review of Books. His work has also appeared in The New Yorker, Harper’s, The Believer, The Nation, and Artforum, among many other publications. At Governors Island, he will be working on his next book, an exploration of place-names in the city.

Warren is a NYFA Fellow and has been awarded residencies with the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, BRICworkspace, Abrons AIRspace, and American Medium. Warren is the recipient of the Baum Award and is featured in Art21’s documentary series “New York Close Up.”</div>

<div>Warren has taught workshops with the Museum of Modern Art, the Art21 Education Department, the Museum of Art &amp; Design, the Brooklyn Arts Council SU-CASA Program, NurtureArt, Dia: Beacon, and Abrons Arts Center. Composer, amateur engineer, scientific tourist, and pack rat, P. Spadine spends the  vast majority of his time guiding the Ashcan Orchestra through its glorification rites praising the known universe. By implementing a growing collection of homemade instruments, simple automata, human performers, and a combination of determinate and generative compositional tools, Ashcan strives to create small musical universes where simple rules flourish into complexity in an attempt to emulate and celebrate the laws that bind the physical world. He is incredibly grateful for the opportunities shared by each venue, from D.I.Y. basement to respectable NYC institution, that has generously allowed Ashcan to share its menagerie since 2007.

Joshua Jelly-Schapiro and Ross Perlin of the Endangered Language Alliance, with special guests, will present the ELA&#8217;s new “Languages of New York” map, exploring the languages spoken on Governors Island from the 17th century to today.

Wave Farm residents Samuel Hertz and Carmelo Pampillonio present their work on radio technologies through listening sessions and hands-on demos.

print(dialogue) is a live performance of computer-generated mini-plays directed and coded by artist Blair Simmons. Actors collaborate with the program to uncover meaning within the machine-made language. The results are a surprising, humorous, and insightful look into the nature of communication and storytelling.

The Ashcan Orchestra is simultaneously the audio/visual work of P. Spadine, a collection of toy, re-appropriated, and homemade instruments, and a revolving performance ensemble based in NYC since 2007. On stages and basements, indoor and out, it has been presenting new music and rituals in acts of celebration and emulation of the known universe. Today the Ashcan Orchestra was Philip Panos, Timothy Rusterholz, and P. Spadine.

Valerie Skakun and P. Spadine have been working as collaborative partners since 2017. The philosophy of Skakun’s recent body of work began the moment she was struck by a car while on her bike and left unable to walk for a year. She has explored sculptures as objects of ritual and labor, ranging from time-based devotions to endurance trainings in order to transform mental and physical states of being. Spadine has worked under the Ashcan Orchestra, a pen name and performance ensemble as a vehicle for his audio/visual experiments since 2007. Informed by a sense of wonder, his work has sought to emulate, celebrate, and demystify the laws that govern the physical universe. Together they work in the realm in which the physicality of sculpture and sound overlap. Skakun and Spadine seek to explore the dual nature of labor and play, as a way to engage the world of wonder within the viewer through a physical catalyst.
Valerie Skakun is an artist, curator, and educator based in New York City. Her work has been presented and performed at various art and music venues across New York City, Houston, and the Bay Area. She is appreciative to the Queens Council on the Arts for awarding two grants, Vermont Studio Center for an Artist Opportunity Fellowship, Highly Authorized for awarding a fully funded residency, and to The Freedom Garden for her two-year duration as artist-in-residence. Skakun received an MFA from Hunter College in 2019 and BFA from The Cooper Union in 2009.
Composer, amatuer engineer, scientific tourist, and packrat, P. Spadine is indebted to a vast community of DIY art and music spaces that allowed his work to grow, and grateful to resources shared by residences at Salem Art Works, Clocktower Gallery, Outpost Artist Resources, and Pioneer Works. Commissions from Issue Project Room, Make Music New York, Roulette Intermedium, and Guerilla Science have been invaluable to the evolution of his compositions and instrument. He is still paying for a BFA in music composition.

On Governors Island, Pioneer Works Narrative Arts Residents and Alumni Residents, along with astronomers and residents from Women in Sound and BUFU: By Us For Us, will share their work with the public through open studios, exhibitions, participatory programs, and workshops hosted in the historic house, Nolan Park 8B, on Saturdays and Sundays from May through October 2020.
