Tahir Carl Karmali is a Brooklyn based artist born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. Karmali focuses on outlier communities whose identities are shaped by economic, political, and social systems. Investigating socioeconomics and ethnicities, Karmali’s work pairs found materials and portraiture to define personal narratives through the mixed mediums of photography, papermaking, and installation. Karmali received a Masters of Digital Photography at the School of Visual Arts. In 2016 he completed a Visual Artist Residency at BRIC, and is the recipient of a 2015 POPCAP ’15 Prize for Contemporary African Photography.
